Having completed my first year in the beautiful Cayman Islands, I thought it appropriate to paint a picture of some of the more iconic subjects found in the sea off Grand Cayman.
I wanted to capture the famous 9-foot-tall, 600-pound bronze mermaid statue named Amphitrite, Siren of Sunset Reef located on the sea bed, some 55 feet from Sunset House Resort. The sculpture was created by 42-year-old Canadian artist Simon Morris. The Mermaid, as she is affectionately called by the Sunset House Resort faithful, is one of Grand Cayman's most popular shore dives.
The main subject of my painting is the turtle, which are often implicated in historic myths regarding the origins of the earth. I had to add a stingray somewhere in the painting, gliding gracefully like a long lost spirit!
